The Wise and Foolish Man

Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and obeys is like a man building a house. He digs deep and lays his foundation on rock. The floods come, and the water tries to wash the house away. But the flood cannot move the house, because the house was built well.  But the one who hears my words and does not obey is like a man who builds his house on the ground without a foundation. When the floods come, the house quickly falls down. And that house is completely destroyed.”

Luke 6:46-49 ICB

What do I need?

  • 200g Cornflour
  • 100 ml Water (Approx)
  • Container/Bowl
  • Rock
  • Toy “House” (we buillt ours out of lego)

What do I do?

  • Mix the cornflour and water together to make “oobleck”.
  • Place one of the houses on the oobleck, and one on a rock.
  • What happens?

What is happening?

The oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, It appears solid, but is actually a liquid. As the house sits on top of the oobleck, it slowly starts sinking through it.

Biblical Link

Just as your house sank through the oobleck, the foolish mans house sank through the sand. The wise man built his house upone a rock, which stood firm through the storms. This is like our life – if we truly build our house upon God’s Word, he will be our foundation and strength through life. If we choose to ignore His Word, and follow only our own desires, then we will not have his help and will fail when we are tested.

Taking Worries Away

Give all your worries to him, because he cares for you

1 Peter 5:7

What do I need?

  • Raisins
  • Lemonade (Clear)
  • Clear Drinking Glass

What to do

  • Fill the glass with lemonade.
  • Drop 5-6 raisins into the glass
  • When you are finished you can eat/drink your experiment.

What is happening?

The raisins sink through the lemonade. As bubbles stick to the raisins, it becomes more bouyant and so the raisins rise to the surface. All the bubbles pop into the air so the raisin sinks again!

Biblical Link

Have you ever had that sinking feeling when you are worried about something? Our worries are like the raisins – When we talk to God he takes them away. We are human though – so our old worries are often replaced by new ones, so the raisins sink again. What is important is that we keep talking to God.

Knock and the Door Opens

Continue to ask and God will give to you. Continue to search and you will find. Continue to knock, and the door will open for you.

Matthew 7:7

What do I need?

  • Paper
  • Colouring Pencils
  • Bowl of Water

What to do:

  • Cut out some paper flowers. The petals need to be the same size of smaller than the centre.
  • For smaller children, let them colour first and then cut out the flowers.
  • Fold the petals inwards, overlapping each petal.
  • Place the folded flower in the water.

What is happening?

  • The paper absorbs the water which causes the petals to open, so that the paper lies flat on the waters surface.

Biblical Link

In Matthew it says that “knock and the door will open”. Just like the petals open, God will open his door to us when we knock.

God’s Rainbow

I am putting my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of the agreement between me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13 ICB

What do I need?

  • Clear Glasses
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Liquid Food Colouring

What to do

  • Add a couple of drops of food colouring to a glass of oil and mix together.
  • Tip the oil and dye mix to a glass of water.

What is happening?

The food colouring is a water-based solution. It can not dissolve in the oil, so an emulsion is formed. When stirred vigrously, the large drops break up into smaller drops within the oil.

The oil mix will float because it is less dense than water. As the food colouring sinks through the oil (becuase it is more dense) and makes contact with the water, it disperses

Biblical Link

In Noah’s Ark, God sends a rainbow as a promise that he will never create such a flood again.
